During October & November 2012 I was invited to the bilingual Saint Pulcherie High Schoolin Istanbul to take part in an artist in residency programme. This was a collaborative art project run by myself and artist Dan Arnold.
As part of an art based programme run within the English department, we submitted the following question to the students ; "what constitutes art in the city? and what does the concept of 'alternative art in the city' mean to you?"
Each student was asked to choose one or more locations from within Istanbul and then propose a means of sharing, not only their own personal view of this specific location, but also how we might access art in this location. Students were encouraged to choose 'alternative' art forms and avoid more traditional stereotypical examples of art in Istanbul. Students were givent he freedom to work in any medium they wished. Each completed piece of art was then plotted on an actual map of Istanbul within an online blog www.lookuponthisplace.com which was incorporated in part of the wider internet site for the project.
The work ( a mix of video, photography, mixed media 3D sculpture, poetry, t-shirt designs, illustration and paintings ) that the students produced formed an exhibition at the school in December 2012 and was curated by everyone involved.
